People in the UK - will the Post Office pay for postal charges to return item wrongly sent to you?

I recently ordered something from an online shop, after waiting quite a while for it to arrive it finally turned up only for me to find the company had made an error and sent me the wrong item to the one I'd ordered.
I contacted them about the mistake through email, and they've agreed to exchange it for the correct item but there was no mention from them about refunding postal charges I would have to pay in order to send them back the wrong item. And as it was an international purchase I'm worrying that to return the item will cost quite a lot.

So what I was wondering is if I take the package into my local Post Office and explain to them the situation, will they return it to the company free of charge or cover the cost of posting it for me?

I doubt it. Why should they? It wasn't their error.

If you brought it into the Post Office I worked in I would say no, for as buildersmate says, it's not the Post Offices fault that you were sent the wrong item. Why don't you get a receipt from the Post Office and return it to them claiming back the postage?

I agree with the above answers. You need to try to contact the company again. If you are going to post it you should considered recorded/signed for delivery.

No the Post Office will not return it free of charge.

If it's posted without paying for it and it's an international item it will come straight back to you if your address can be determined. If not it will be destroyed.

If it were inland the same might happen, but they might try to get the recipient to pay for it (plus a surcharge) first. They would be under no obligation to pay.

That assumes you get it past the PO counter in the first place. You shouldn't be able to but I've known people just dump it and walk away.
