I recently bought a nice 26” Digital TV with built in DVD and freeview to replace my portable tv with a separate freeview box, serviced by an external analogue arial.

Of course when I plug the analagoue arial into the new TV nothing happens I don’t get a service. So, went and bought a digi arial from Lewis’ paid about £30, still no joy.

I have a digital TV in the sitting room with built in freeview too but that wouldn’t work either, if I didn’t have a virgin box, and, if I were to have a virgin box in the bedroom they will charge me £9 am month.

I understand the concept analogue arial to analogue tv is ok, just now but what are my options other than what I have tried I am sure there are others…

I live in a flat. There are restrictions relating todishes and arials outside windows (The Council), should I just get a satellite engineer in to put an arial up on my roof?

I’m demented as everyone else I’v spoken to don’t seem to have any probs Arrrrrrrrgh!!

Thanks but my old TV was not digital, and the built in freeview in the big TV will not work without the virgin box either i still don't get it!! What settings on the new TV would i need to change then?

There is no such thing as an "analogue aerial" or a "digital aerial", they are both the same thing.

An ordinairy aerial on your roof will pick up both analogue signals AND digital signals.

(Some old aerials are not very good at picking up digital signals, but that does not alter the fact there is no such thing as a digital aerial).

Hi, as VHG says there is no such thing as Digital or Analogue aerials they are the same thing. A lot of TVs will accomodate both signals so you will need to make sure it's set to the right one. If you have a button on your remote control that says Source the answer will probably be on that. Mine says DTV on the source button and when turned to that I pick up digital Tv fine. On some TVs when you select a source you will also need to press the OK or Confirm button too or they revert back to the original source. Good luck.

On my TV that has built in freeview (digital) I have to press a button on my remote control to switch between watching analogue TV and digital TV.

Check the booklet that came with your TV and see if there is instructions on how to switch between watching analogue TV and digital TV.

On my TV when I press a certain button a small menu comes up on the TV showing ATV (Analogue TV) and DTV (Digital TV).

You need to select the DTV option (or whatever your TV shows) to switch to watching digital TV.

I can't see the words "tune" or scan for channels or similar appear anywhere in the question or any answers

hibeeslass, you have actually done the search for channels on the TV haven't you?

You were getting a signal then, so how is it the aerial?.

Hi, Zacsmaster didn't realise I had put yours and VHGs answer together, as you said about the Av button and on my TV the source and AV buttons are not the same ones. As VHG says in a later post you need to check with the instruction book as they vary from make to make and even model to model. Sorry if I tread on any toes I was only trying to give another suggestion.

When i go into the AV and i have the options TV DTV EXT1 EXT2 etc when i go into DTV it says 'database empty" I know all about the functions of the AV button.

You didn't answer my question, have you actually done a search for channels?

Also what is the make and model of TV?

Whilst it is in in DVB mode, select the setup menu and in there should be an option titled something like" DVB Auto Setup" (that's it's called on my Panasonic tv). Selecting that should search and set the Freeview channels.

On my tv this option is only available in DVB mode. The AV is something completely different.

Yes i searched both TV's The Big TV is a Sharp Aquos Model LC-32D44E (I know its probably rubbish) and the offending bedroom one is Technika LCD22-208. Did i mention I have a virgin media Digi box that i use with the with the Sharp or else i'd have nowt!! ha ha.

Aother thing worth mentioning is, I actually tried to use the freeview box I have had in the bedroom on the Sharp and it didn't recognise that either! x

Hi hibeeslass, As I said in my earlier post, on some TVs you will need to press the OK button on the remote before it changes it over to DTV. I have got one of the types you mention, the TECHNIKA 22 ins but slightly different model. To get it into DTV mode I have to go to Source, then go down to DTV and then press the OK button in the lower half of the remote not the one in the middle of it. After doing this I go to the D.MENU also in the lower half of the remote, go to settings, then installation and then tune it in to the channels using automatic search. All this is done using the arrow keys in the bottom half of the remote and not the ones in the top of it. Not sure if this will work on yours but it may help.
