Help! Song title and artist from Dawson's creek.

I really like a song from "guess who's coming to dinner". Season 3 of the Dawson's creek DVD box set. I can't find out what it is. Played as guests start arriving for thanksgiving dinner. Starts in the youtube clip at about 5.48.

Lyrics start: "Oh you know it's been too long since everything was easy, since the road that I was on was simple and straight."

I'm not sure about the next bit, could be "But I'm putting shadows on..." then "...driving toward the sun..."

"...ready for the life to find me that i've been driving from..."

Another bit goes: "I'm gonna look a few more folks right in the eye. Worry less 'bout what the world might say."

Female singer, I assume American or Canadian. Probably from the nineties.
