Did you watch Big Fat Gypsy Wedding last night on C4? Was this a true reflection of the Traveller Lifestyle? They seemed to have strong moral values and principles and there was a real sense of community. And they all seemed to have plenty of money! Or was the programme painting far too rosy a picture?

Factor....this is a very interesting read.

I don't know why but once a year they use to come into our pub. Some sort of Gypsy get together. One year one of the kids got hit by a car and was in the hospital for over a week. The hospital was about a 5 minute walk from our pub so they were in every day. The car park was filled with brand new cars.....they were all covered in gold....and we'd never taken so much money behind the bar.
for all their religious standing and fear of God, i was surprised to see how they sat in church, kids on backs of seats etc. Surely if that the one thing they do respect then theyd behave a bit better within the church.
It's a Catholic thing Red. It's drummed into us from day 1.....
if only I'd know that at school, ummmm. The pews in chapel were always so uncomfy.
The clue is in the title GYPSY wedding, true gypsies tend to be moral law abiding people unfortunately they only make up a very small percentage of the travelling scum we all know and love for their "clean law adiding way of life"
Trouble is paddy that those shown last night were in the main travellers and not true gypsies. They called themselves 'travellers'. As you say the old style gypsies are few and far between.
I watched this last night - I think the last girl to get married - Joan I think her name was, said she was old at 22 to get wed in the gypsy clan - she also had a job and her parents lived in a house. Reading between the lines, I don't think she really wanted to get married, but was going with what is expected of her. It almost has undertones of arranged marriages.

I wondered where they stored them massive wedding dresses when the wedding was over - not a lot of room in a caravan !!
i agree, Den, she looked quite sad. And when the "happy" couple spoke after the wedding she said something along the lines of "we argue a lot, its not a prefect relationship"
what a sad thing to say on your wedding day.
And the fact that they had only met twice Red...!!

They argued on the phone....For Funks Sake
omg i missed they had only met twice!
Your right Red - when they were interviewed at the end outside their wedding venue - it looked like they were on a date not just got married. What a pretty girl she is.

I also don't think she liked the idea that she may have to move to Ireland, leaving her family and friends behind. Surely there must be drives in the Uk he could tarmac (;0(
Yeah....they had only met twice.

It's arranged marriages basically.
Hiya ummmm - yep, has undertones of arranged marriages. They seem to be wary of getting involved with 'country' folk as they call anyone who is not a travaller. I wonder what they have got to hide........(:0 D
i agree what an attractive girl she was. notice the dress maker didnt *** them off, mmm wonder why lol
S laG
Because she makes the stupid dresses....

She must be loaded.
all those cash payments, i wonder why she didnt just say a wedding dress costs between £x and £y? lol
I thought the brides' dresses were hideous until you caught a glimpse of the bridesmaids. Oh dear.
lol, Den. i was trying to work out if the woman in the black and white (with buggie) was pregnant or taking her fashion tips from Vicky Pollard.
you can all snigger at the outfits but they were what the brides' wanted and everyone seemed to enjoy the weddings.....bit of snobbery going on here.
