I dont know how things are in the UK but here in the USA does anyone know why movies always open in theatres on fridays and are always released on video on tuesdays?

Logic dictates that most people go the the cinema  at the weekend, so therefore the highest revenue is gained by opening on a Friday. Conversely most people view a video or DVD during the weekday nights thus increasing their sales by releasing on an early weekday night. It is all about revenue and not about choice for us mere mortals..... hope this helps! 
it is all to do with money and the charts

same reason music is relesed on a monday, you get the most number of copies sold before the sunday chart
