My daughter has 'The Poseidon Adventure' on video, and we watch it quite often. Having watched 'Spinal Tap' again over the weekend, I was struck by the visual similarlity in hair / beard appearence between bassist Derek Smallls and the folk singer who died in the wave collision - his sister survived. Is this coincidence, or another injection of irony by the Tapsters - one 'musician' looking very much like another. Any comments?

I'd say it's coincidence.  Spinal Tap took their inspiration from Glam Rock/Metal.  A reference to the folk singer in The Poseidon Adventure wouldn't be literal enough.  I think Derek Smalls' image was based more on bands like Judas Preist.
