I would like to buy a copy of this film on DVD of but I read in the reviews that the subtitles are awful because they have been translated into American English. Can anyone help? Are they as bad as people are saying or are there (hopefully) 2 versions available?

Hey,

I am French but live in England and i happen to have seen both versions...and i can tell you that the one dubbed into American English really is quite bad, but on the other hand, it is not easy to translate the particular slang used in the film. My advice: try to watch it in French with English subtitles (the translation is different and much better than the one of dubbed version). I saw it on dvd (with the three versions available on it) while shopping at HMV before Christmas so i guess you'll manage to find it quite easily in any big shop selling dvds...

Thanks lil'frog. I remember watching the film years ago I think on Channel 4 & I don't remember the sub-titles being that bad. I guess that Channel 4 had their own people who do the sub-titles & the DVD company have theirs. I'll take my chance & look in HMV like you suggest.
