Homer had put the family Christmas money on the dog (as he hadn't got his bonus and everyone was expecting more) and it lost. Bart and Homer then brought the dog home after the owner said they could have it. The family had their best Christmas and it all worked out. I think this all comes from the first episode of the Simpsons (as an individual series and not as part of the Tracy Ullman show).
The name of the Simpsons dog is Santa's Little Helper. He is named this because whilst Homer was out of money, he had a part time job as Santa at a local department store. The dog he bet on in the races did not win him any money that he was going to buy Christmas presents with, but he took the dog home as it was losing all its races and was not wanted anymore. It turned out that the dog was the best Christmas present for all the family anyway. So as he helped Homer get out of trouble, he gave the dog the name Santa's Little Helper.
Just to confirm: it *was* the first episode of the first season of The Simpsons proper, broadcast in the US on 17 December 1989 and titled "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire". Santa's Little Helper was already the name of the dog - that's why Homer decided to put all his money on it. And he didn't exactly finish last - he didn't even manage to finish the race!
