Italian dubbed in English children's TV mini-series Pepino

Hi there
Does anyone remember a children’s TV programme from the late 80s that I think was called Pepino? It was about a (I think Swiss) boy called Andy who had gone for a holiday in Sicily and initially was picked on by the local boys (e.g. laughed at him for using an umbrella).
This all changed however when he helped prevent a donkey getting trapped in a fire (I think that’s right). The gang of boys then accepted him and he was initiated using a secret handshake. The episode ends with all the boys getting wet and the final shot is frozen while ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon is played.
It was broadcast on BBC2 and was an S4 Cymru production? It definitely had Welsh connections as it was dubbed in English but with Welsh accents!
Well there’s a bit more I remember but I suspect if you haven’t got it by now there’s no point in my trying any further. But thanks for reading this and trying to help.

I remember this show but I'm pretty sure it was on ITV in about 1991. If it's the same show I remember the kid being picked on at school for being foreign and speaking a different language, and the teacher had to translate what he was saying so the kids would accept him. I definitely remember the fire scene and I seem to remember him having to save a girl as well, who might have had a romantic interest in him. If we're thinking of the same show I remember it airing around October to November 1991.
I've found a bit more information online.
