why is it known as a "score"?

you get musical scores as well, although these are more often termed 'piece' or such like. its just a term for a collection of parts for various instruments, the overall score tells the parts how to interact, timings, accents etc

film music would impy the audible, whereas the score is the full instructions for every member of the piece creating the audible.

incidentally the term score in this sense, came from the composers/scribes who used to 'score' (notch or scratch) the staves on their clay or parchment. so essentially, its the written notation.
