Every week we see these enormous queues to audition. Surely not everyone actually gets to go on stage in front of the "big 3" so how are these particular auditionees selected?

The auditionees are judged first by the production staff. Only the best and worst go on to meet the judges. Anyone who is just a normal singer doesn't get a look in.

The queue you see outside are the audience waiting to go in.
