i use bisto gravy granules for stews etc. the bisto used to come in powder form in cardboard boxes, are they still available ?

I'm not fond of the granules -i'd prefer the powder as well for gravy.I tend to mix cornflour with the granules now for a better gravy:)
Cant remember the last time I saw the powder -sorry.

Oxo granules make lovely gravy.

Not sure if gravy powder is still available but a Google search will probably confirm one way or the other.

mrc.c, have used oxo, not as good as oxo.imo.thanks all for answers
haha Tony :) It seems to work for me but I only put a few granules in.I dont even use granules alone for thickening stew or mince-its a nasty aftertaste.I find the cornflour dilutes it a bit and thickens at the same time.
Mind you -im a rubbish cook so wouldnt take my word for it either :)

I guess it's all down to personal taste, anne. My sis buys Goldenfry gravy powder and won't use anything else. And it has to be powder, not granules. I'm not keen on powder as it goes lumpy every time I use it.

dont like cornflour, funny taste.
I agree when its on its own but its okay if you strike the balance with beef/chicken/veg stock.
I've never used Bisto or any other gravy granules at home....maybe because it's not an American thing,and I find it salty.
If making a stew,I always dredge the meat in seasoned flour-that should result in a thick enough gravy. As for cornflour-it will taste 'raw' if you've not dissolved it properly in cold water first,and then let the liquid simmer after adding the mixture to your stew or casserole. It will then be cooked enough.
Pasta. How do Americans make gravy to go with a roast if you don't use granules / powder?
Thats what i do Pasta -exactly !! I find the granules and cubes etc (or ect lol) are really salty as well -only found out through wasted grub tho :(
micmak-you use the juices in the tin. Put it on the hob on a medium heat-stir and scrape to loosen all the nice crusty-ish bits-then add some flour and stir it into a paste-then add water gradually as you keep stirring. Let it simmer until it's the consistency you want...season well. Oh...and if necessary-skim fat off before you start.
