are indoor amplifier aeriels any good??

Depends on individual circumstances including the strength of the signal where you live. Only buy if you can return it if it proves to be useless. An indoor loft version is probably a better bet.

if you live within about 10miles of your local transmitter then it might work, otherwise it almost certainly won't work.

If you mean an indoor aerial booster, I bought one of these some years ago, installed it in the loft and hooked it up to a conventional outdoor roof mounted aerial and powered it from a socket on the landing. This was when we went from 1 telly in the house to 4. It enabled all four of us in the family to watch our own TV in separate rooms - something that we couldn't have done without the booster.
The signal on the one original TV was perfectly OK without being boosted. I agree with gingejbee that it may not be much good if your unboosted signal strength is poor.

I've never been that impressed with them, but I have a friend who says the indoor aerial he bought proved better than the signal he was getting from his roof aerial ! (Makes me wonder if he needs someone to check his roof aerial.)

When the analogue tv signal is switched off in your area, the digital signal will be boosted, you may find you wont need an amplifier when the changeover happens. Check the digital tv web site to see when the changeover happens in your area
