whats the film called?

Can anyone tell me the name of the film, in which a little boy is kidnapped and his mother and the police spend years looking for him. At the end the policeman finds him, drives him back across america to his mum, with police escorts from every state???? It`s been bugging me for years, thanks x

That was my first thought hopalong but it didn't have that ending. He came back some time into the film and the story then concentrated on his life settling back with his family as a teenager. In Without a Trace the ending was as helbags described.
