Abuse or discipline? What do you think?
19 Answers
They did not ban physical punishment in schools until 1987. By this stage my older brother was already in high school. He told me the story of one pupil teasing another about his disabled brother. A teacher with a disabled child himself found and later burst into the classroom. Grabbing the pupil he hurled him, skimming him across the desks, and then dragged him outside where I presume he beat and yelled at the pupil.
I mean, 1987 was not eons ago! What do you think? Was that my brother and his class witnessing abuse or the correct punishment?

There were other teachers though, who seemed to delight in giving some kids a good hammering. My dad was a teacher from the early 70s to the late 80s and witnessed a lot of the latter, and I remember seeing a few examples of the former. I think in your brother's case the teacher 'lost it'. I don't think he was being professional in what he did, but I think human emotion got the better of him - understandable but not entirely excusable.
I honestly believe that if there was punishment in schools now we would not have the uncontrolled behaviour of some youngsters that we witness daily,I think that over the years the do gooders have completely lost it. Look at nature for example watch a Lioness controlling her cubs, one swipe from her paw & the yougsters soon fall into line. Ron.
teachers lost it regularly, I also remember my biology teacher who used to disappear into the store cupboard on lots of occasions during the lesson to have a swig of booze.
my english teacher had an affair with one of the 5th years, the physics teacher used to shout down kids ears at very close range.

I had the cane in Headmasters locked study a few times, not too many.
He used to walk towards his cupboard .. and open the doors. He used to consider which cane to use .. the thin whippy one or the larger one. After dropping our trousers and leaning over his armchair, it ruddy hurt. Later at home one would look in the mirror at the marks/weals.
Likewise, in class, one of our Maths teachers used to lose it regularly if someone was quietly chatting or laughing. He would throw a piece of chalk at them as hard as he could .. or throw a wooden board rubber!

I agree with Ratter. Any good teacher should have the people skills to be able to diffuse a situation. I went to a junior school where we lived under the threat of the headmistress having a cane. I don`t actually think she did have one but the threat was enough to instill fear into us. Fear isn`t a good way to teach kids.
Al....that school is the best in the town. It's so good I think they have managed to get their catchment area down to just the few streets off the Billing Road (school end) all the other pupils have to be interviewed and are selected.
