Abuse or discipline? What do you think?

They did not ban physical punishment in schools until 1987. By this stage my older brother was already in high school. He told me the story of one pupil teasing another about his disabled brother. A teacher with a disabled child himself found and later burst into the classroom. Grabbing the pupil he hurled him, skimming him across the desks, and then dragged him outside where I presume he beat and yelled at the pupil.

I mean, 1987 was not eons ago! What do you think? Was that my brother and his class witnessing abuse or the correct punishment?

I think there were many occasions of teachers 'losing it' - especially when corporal punishment was the norm. There were other teachers though, who seemed to delight in giving some kids a good hammering. My dad was a teacher from the early 70s to the late 80s and witnessed a lot of the latter, and I remember seeing a few examples of the former. I think in your brother's case the teacher 'lost it'. I don't think he was being professional in what he did, but I think human emotion got the better of him - understandable but not entirely excusable.
He did lose it, personal circumstances probably contributed, but it was abuse!..........
abusive but understandable. Bet he (the pupil) was much more respectful to disabled folk.....

back then there was all sorts - we had a biology master who threw bunsens and Roberts, a massive tome at you if you weren't paying attention......
out of order perhaps but low life scum like that only understand one thing I'm afraid.
I honestly believe that if there was punishment in schools now we would not have the uncontrolled behaviour of some youngsters that we witness daily,I think that over the years the do gooders have completely lost it. Look at nature for example watch a Lioness controlling her cubs, one swipe from her paw & the yougsters soon fall into line. Ron.
In my school, back in the early sixties, all the teachers could hit a fly across the class room with a blackboard cleanerdue to all the practice they got on boys and girls who misbehaved in class
I suppose it was abuse pippy
why? are the people concerned goint to take action against this teacher/
Total abuse!!! A teacher should know how to sort that situation.
ditto Paddy
teachers lost it regularly, I also remember my biology teacher who used to disappear into the store cupboard on lots of occasions during the lesson to have a swig of booze.

my english teacher had an affair with one of the 5th years, the physics teacher used to shout down kids ears at very close range.
I had the cane in Headmasters locked study a few times, not too many.
He used to walk towards his cupboard .. and open the doors. He used to consider which cane to use .. the thin whippy one or the larger one. After dropping our trousers and leaning over his armchair, it ruddy hurt. Later at home one would look in the mirror at the marks/weals.
Likewise, in class, one of our Maths teachers used to lose it regularly if someone was quietly chatting or laughing. He would throw a piece of chalk at them as hard as he could .. or throw a wooden board rubber!
That was at a respected town Grammar School in the seventies.
Ummmm knows that school pretty well.
: )
Haha Cazzzzz...my English teacher was the same. Brilliant teacher though..
I think it kept the kids on their toes, growing up I never felt it was an abusive environment, it just encouraged us to try to behave..
I agree with Ratter. Any good teacher should have the people skills to be able to diffuse a situation. I went to a junior school where we lived under the threat of the headmistress having a cane. I don`t actually think she did have one but the threat was enough to instill fear into us. Fear isn`t a good way to teach kids.
Trouble is now we've gone to the other extreme and you've got teachers like factor30 saying he spends large parts of lessons just trying to stop pupils using their mobile phones. Great learrning environment.
I agree prudie
Al....that school is the best in the town. It's so good I think they have managed to get their catchment area down to just the few streets off the Billing Road (school end) all the other pupils have to be interviewed and are selected.

The six formers have to wear suit and ties. Great school. Mine go to Becket...!
Yep ..
I had to have an interview too!
Bad news getting caught without correct uniform etc.
Now if the kids of today had a taste of what it was like just 25 years ago : )
