I find these champagne socialists like Emma Thompson, Anni Lennox, Bonno and a few others extremely irritating, constantly lecturing us on what is wrong with the world. As soon as they appear on TV I turn it off.

If they were to to turn around and say, I'm building a hospital/school here in Africa, and every last penny i've got will be spent on it and I'm going to live here in a mud hut, i might just listen. But them flying 1st class to a third world country to tell us people are starving and dying of easily preventable illnesses annoys me beyond belief!
If you have a social concoince, and the platform to express it to a worldwide audience by virtue of being a famous actor or musician, what would you do? Try and draw people's attention to issues and potential solutions, or simply siut back and let it be someone else's responsibility?
Youy turn off - a lot of people don't - and that makes their efforts worthwhile.

agreed andy hughes...there are thousands of celebs who wouldnt and dont lift a finger...so its better than them doing nothing.
the only thing i find a little bit odd sometimes is when the mega famous ones are begging us for cash...the ones with many many millions in the bank...they ask us to give for instance, a childs piggy bank...and raffle making £77.48p ....etc...which is great too, but seems like buttons when you think what they themselves could give and not even notice.
i would just like to know how much they actually donate themselves really.
although i know they wont tell as it would become a competition as who gave the most...which wouldnt be a bad thing....

david51058 and others, I think your reaction is a bit over-simplistic and borne more of our celebrity culture than anything to do with the actual things they are talking about. As a society we are obsessed by celebs and want to know all about them but at the same time can't wait to shoot them down. So instead of saying "well done for highlighting that issue" we criticise them. Or, perhaps it is the issues themselves some people object to?
