Odd one - my town smells of a chip fryer!

Admittedly I am sensitive being pregnant and in that nauseous first trimester but the air in my town seems to smell like chip fat! it's horrid, even my husband noticed the smell when he drove home tonight.
My house is off road however and i can smell it through the bedroom window.
Could this be some dodgy use of vegetable oil in cars? Would it linger in the air this much? If not what else could it be?

Vegetable oil is being tried as an alternative fuel in cars although the numbers are very limited. The exhaust does smell like over heated chip oil. Knowing how the smell of hot chip oil lingers it wouldn't take too many converted vehicles to pollute a town.
I was told a lot of these experiments are being carried out in Wales. The smell of things to come?
