I saw Pavarotti in "Un ballo in Maschera" in the early 90's. I was aware of his wonderful voice but I wasn't prepared for the huge size of it....it was ruddy enormous !

I saw Tito Gobbi at Covent Garden in 1974 and was told thirty years later by an opera-mane ( balletomane but liked singing better ) that I couldnt have and I shouldnt make things up or I would be caught out with a lie in my mouth
and it was one of the most embarassing moments of my life
( not the performance which was good but the stinging rebuke )
