Why Has The Media.............

made obese people acceptable? They are unhealthy yet more and more we see plus size models being proud of their bodies instead of trying to attain a healthy weight. Should the media be pandering to these fatties or educating them that fat is not good?

I am all for positive plus size marketing. If larger people can get swimsuits and exercise wear that they feel okay in, they are more likely to swim and exercise. If they can get clothes they feel confident in they are more likely to socialise and take a pride in their appearance rather than locking themselves away comfort eating. Hopefully this will help some...

What is the healthy weight banker_frank and are you there?
People are unique and different. Be proud of who you are regardless how people see you.
This post is the perfect reason why people need to be proud of their own bodies cus small minded people never will be.
You only got urself to keep you pushing through life, evidently others are just there to try bring you down.

Most people know what a healthy weight is. Being overweight is the major cause of death in the UK and costs the NHS millions of pounds a year. This has nothing to do with positive body image, its health benefits of being slimmer. My question was about the role media plays in promoting overweight models, not personal opinions on those models
Plus size models are only there because of plus size people Frank, if there was no market for massive clothes they wouldn't need advertising.
It's not a question of 'acceptable', it's profit driven.
Not forgetting that it's a lot quicker and easier to buy the next size up instead of addressing the real problem.

Second only to smoking!
Yes if you looked at the figures provided on the news yesterday out of 48000 new cases of bowel cancer reported last year. The experts believe that 4564 were cause by being obese but on 2324 were caused by smoking. Taken from the 6 oclock news last night.
Now in my mind those figure mean nothing because unless they tell us how many news cases of lung cancer there have been and how many have been caused by obesity and how many by smoking - its pointless

You need to read the article you linked to, banker_frank - it mostly debunks the headline.
"This means we cannot say that higher BMI is a cause of early death. But the study results make a strong case for higher BMI being linked to early death, across several geographical regions, among men and women, and at all levels of BMI."

The majority of people in the UK are overweight so it stands to reason the majority of people who die will also be overweight.
Some of those people who are overweight will also smoke, or drink alcohol to excess, or develop cancer or other life reducing disease.
According to this report the biggest killer in the UK is dementia:

Surely some of those with the disease were also overweight smokers and drinkers?
