I bought my mum a Kinde for Christmas and it took ages for me to drum it into her head that she didn't need her computer to buy books, I was having to go through it with her, on the phone whilst I was in the bath. She got there in the end but I think I'll show her that email as I think she'll prefer to download via the computer.
You should definately check out www.gutenberg.org if you haven't already found it.
They specialise in making all sorts of books freely available in all sorts of formats including Kindle.
They have to be out of copyright of course which means 70 years after the death of the Author
but that includes
Books by Dickens, Jane Austin, Oscar Wilde
Sherlock Holmes
Jeeves and Worcester
etc.
Pretty much anything written before 1900
