I was confused with tonight's programme. One mum to be was in a bath of water.
Baby's head was out and under water. No rush to get mum out of water..
How come baby didn't drown?
Am I being a bit thick?

The baby is in liquid through its time in the womb until the waters break, and then has oxygen through the umbilical cord until it is born. No need to get the baby out until it comes into contact with air.
Clover has it spot on.
Baby has had his/her head in fluid for the past 9 months. A few more seconds isn't going to make much difference! He/she will still be getting oxygenated blood through the umbilical cord.

Thank you all. I understand now.
Could have been a problem had he come out crying.
They don't come out crying though.
I have it on good authority that my brother did.
If that were possible they wouldn't allow water births.

[ vagitus uterinus - always associated with later death of the child during birth]
You're weird, PP.
P.P is quite correct, if the neonate takes in air (breaths) underwater, then it might drown. One of the dangers (unusual) of water births.
