whats going on in this country?
34 Answers
44 years old, born and bred in this country, but god am I ****** off with whats happening to us now. Surely I can't be alone in thinking that if you work, pay your taxes, drive a car,own a house, just the normal things we all aspire to, then this government will try to make things as hard for you as they can. But if you've never worked, or on say disability benefits through some imagined illness that no doctor can prove, or even better if you're some scumbag junkie who's robbed houses, mugged people and totally destroyed other peoples lives, well don't worry cos you're the victim aren't you...its societys fault after all..no one can be blamed for anything anymore, we can't victimise any member of society cos big brother Blair wants us all to be equals in his great politically correct diverse society that he and his social engineering policies have left us with.
Well as George Orwell said: everyone is equal, but some people are more equal than others, Blair and his cronies, and every politician come to think of it, just don't have a clue what life is like in everyday Britain do they? They don't have to lock themselves in at night like millions of people afraid cos some junkie looking for money for his next fix, will break in, you can't even go for a drink at night now cos if you look at someone the wrong way you're likely to get a pint glass in the face..Immigration is running unchecked, we're letting all the scum of the earth in..I could go on but i'm getting more and more angry as I write this, so let me hear your opinions, and let me know if you agree or disagree with me.

Makes you want to join the dope heads and mug some old ladies doesn't it. I wonder how quick things would change if Tony and his cronies had to live on an estate full of the sub humans he's helped to create.Still never mind eh lets all ****** off to the BeGees pad for our summer hols. Littlejohn is right, you couldn't make it up!
packardbell - I totally agree with you but it's a shame that I see your post has been edited by AB ed.........I am sure you did not swear and I am wondering if we must now all say and do and post what is acceptible to the new Ed - if so (and with the greatest respect to the new ed) then this AB is becoming a mirror to reflect what the Ed's own personal views and opinions are.
packard - I have never known you to swear so I presume your post was edited for the editors personal reasons - there is something called freedom of speech and if any persons views that they kindly share on AB are going to be subject to such stringent editorial methods (and crass posts/comments left on AB for all to view) then I will seriously think twice about posting a question or an answer here.

There may be some truth in the original post, but in my view he/she is way off the mark.
In my view the worst thing now is the lack of transparency, particularly with regard to taxation. The plain truth (as I see it) is that the government would not dare to admit how much tax is actually needed to carry out what they want to do so we have ever and ever greater "stealth taxes".
Now these are nearly all called "charges" or "fees", never "taxes". There is a firm belief that many councils actually factor in a certain number of fines (parking, speeding, etc.) in their budget, and then make damned sure that that level is achieved, often by underhand (but strictly legal) methods.
The other thing is that it doesn't seem to matter who you vote for, nothing will change. This is because the real decision is made SOMEWHERE ELSE and councils are powerless to challenge them. Look, for example, at the furore over fortnightly rubbish collections, coming soon to an area near you! This will happen because of a European Directive over how much can be put in landfill and councils will be fined if that is not achieved. Guess who finishes up paying (either directly or by loss of service).

Yep, largely agree.
I'm just waiting for somebody to come on and call you a Daily Mail reader. As far as the liberal hand wringers on this site are concerned, anybody who doesn't agree with their opinion or anybody who happens to be right of centre, is automatically a Daily Mail reader.
It will happen.

There is real truth in what packardbell is saying - the truth is that a growing proportion of 'us' middle england employed citizens are feeling increasingly persecuted.
The 'working classes' ie, the ones that actually go to work are the financial backbone of this country, and we are being constricted in every aspect of our lives.
Do the people with no tax and insurance pay speeding fines - of course not, their cars are not registered in their names. Do people on benefits deal with ever rising council tax - no, they don't pay for it in the first place.
I know many people who are on housing benefits, the vast majority of which need it, and I don't begrude them. However, as a single woman with a standard income I am forced to rent a room in someone elses house, because there is no way on this planet I can afford to even buy a bedsit where I live.
I would have to earn in excess of 70k a year to afford a one bedroom flat.
You have no idea how many times a week I concider getting pregnant and signing off work through stress..... It really would solve all my problems.

nice to see I have more people agree with me than disagree so far. I'm not some far right bigot believe it or not, just an ordinary working bloke who's fed up of paying out for the bone idle in this country, sick of increasing fuel bills and taxes, specially these so called green ones! what a con that is, just another excuse for gordon brown to rob us blind....go tell it to the chinese and yanks gordon!
In my opinion the origional post is illogical, very generalised and badly thought out. It's just the typical speel that the right wing newspapers sell to those who don't like to think behind the headlines. If you are british employed, own your own house and are employed you are probably a lot better off than most people on this planet let alone a victim.
To say that you lock yourself up at home terrified of being burgled of junkies and cant even go out for fear of being glassed is plain ridiculous and just shows how badly yoy that have been brainwashed by the media fear campaign. How many times have you been glassed or burgled by junkies?
It may be easy for you to see junkies as filth who the government pander to at every turn, but the truth is they are human like you and if you were more aware of the issues many junkies deal with and why they are junkies you would realise how pathetic your argument is.
Finally your comments about immigration are just plain offensive. You make no reference to the immigrants who have contributed to our society but only "the scum of the earth". At least try and provide some kind of balanced argument instead of just an angry ill informed rant.

Hi
I'm one of the liberal hand-wringers, and I'm going to say something odd here...
packardbell is raising points that absolutely have to be listened to and acknowledged. I completely disagree with the thrust of his post, but that's because I don't walk in his shoes and have had a different life.
But those people who do feel disaffected and let down by what they see around them need a voice. It's dangerous to just dismiss them. Their views may be based on impression rather than fact, but they're valid all the same.
Now, I must get back to reading the Guardian...and I have at least 18 trees to hug this afternoon.

"Surely I can't be alone in thinking that if you work, pay your taxes, drive a car,own a house, just the normal things we all aspire to, then this government will try to make things as hard for you as they can. - exactly how do they make it hard for you?
Have you got enough food to eat?
Do you have clean water to drink from tap?
Do you have clothes to wear?
Do you have a roof over your head?
Okay, well the basics are covered.
Have you been on holiday recently?
Do you own a car?
Do you have a tv, dvd player, sky?
Do you go to the pub with your mates?
hmmm - boy this is a tough life!
When is the last time you were mugged?
When was the last time you were beaten up?
Of course this happens, but I would love to know of a country where there is no crime.

I don't hold any ill feelings towards addicts, immigrants, those on genuine benefits or any other group of society that needs or wants help.
I do help... I help all the bl**dy time, with time, money, taxes, not being a burden, and I don't begrude any of it.
But do you lot not understand that I am FED UP with then having more and more stealth taxes levied on me, to the point where I am financially crippled, in debt, depressed with no discernable future. If they don't stop, I will be in no fit state to help anyone.
PS - I WORK for a living, every single day - I actually work two jobs at the moment to make ends meet - why the HELL shouldn't I go on holiday once a year ????

Furthermore (you've got me started) My, and those like me, expendable income - IS the economy. The fact I want to go for a beer on a friday night, pays the staff's wages, it pays the landlords profits and it pays the brewery's costs.
When we end up with nothing to spend money on - no new sofa's, no meal out at the weekend, it's the economy, jobs and livelyhoods that suffer.
STOP SUFFOCATING THIS COUNTRY.
