Pain in crowned tooth

I've just started having some pain in one of my front teeth, which was crowned about 7 - 8 years ago. The crown has been getting looser for a few weeks now, and when I went to see the dentist she was not keen to do anything about it as she didn't want to try to take it off in case the post underneath broke. (it wasn't painful then). Now it's getting to the stage where it's a lot looser and painful as well - I was reading something about this on another forum and it was suggested that maybe something might have got into the tooth and act as an irritant - is this likely? I've had to change dentists as my old one retired and we moved house - fortunately a new dental practice opened up near us, which was very convenient. What can the dentist do? As I said, it's a front tooth (all four front teeth are crowns) so I don't want to lose the tooth. Thanks for any help.

Sounds as if you might have an infection - ask the dentist to Xray it, she'll be able to see then what's going on and decide what's best to do.

Thanks boxtops, I'll give the surgery a ring on monday and arrange an appointment.

I have my 2 front teeth crowned and used to get terrible toothache in one. The dentist removed the crown, did root canal work on it and replaced the crown. It's never bothered me since.

I am with you all the way bid767 - just in from dentist on Friday - with exact thing as you - like you I was terrified he broke the post but he "knocked me out" - twilight sleep - drilled into back of crown which I thought could not be done but anyway there was "pus"/pressure - he released the pus and he told me he took "the bad nerve" probably from the post (your nerve is away up in the gum at the top of post - that I know) and the pressure on the tooth has gone down. He took a cuppla x-rays. Having said that I have to back in March to get second treatment - bless him - he did explain but I could not take it in. I think it will be to clean the crown up. Like you FRONT TOOTH - you will do anything to keep it. I would say your crown has dropped down and sensitivity is there or infection - he will take an x-ray and he will take it from there.
