I'm from the States and I was wondering about American stereotypes in media in the UK.
Like:
Are there many?
Are they generally accepted as true?
Does it color(colour) your impressions when you meet somebody from the US?

I think the bad reputation has a lot to do with the rootin' tootin' shootin' sort of comments we hear from American politicians on TV all the time. US foreign policy seems to consist of: If it moves, bomb it; if it doesn't, bomb it till it does. (As long as the country concerned has oil, that is. We haven't heard much about saving civilians in Zimbabwe, despite years of slaughter and rigged elections. For their sake, I hope they find oil soon).
This doesn't leave a good impression on others.
Nor does Guantanamo

US foreign policy is a pretty rough topic here, too. I guess US media doesn't cover as much or we're immune to it. I really like how we are enemies of Cuba so we put all the "terrererst" there. Learned that from Dubya. Just out of curiosity are we supposed to bomb Zimbabwe? Or not. At least we stopped bombing Libya. Our part of overthrowing mideast governments should have ended with wikileaks.
"terrererst"

? is that right? even in americanspeak that looks dodgy.

We love the hypocrisy:
Libya is bombed "to protect civilians".
Saudi Arabia sends in 300 tanks to Bahrain to help to kill protesting civilians and nobody says a word. Why? Maybe because it is the headquarters of the US navy's fifth fleet and they like their base.
Zimbabwe has been slaughtering civilians for years and nobody does anything. No strategic interests there.
Think about isnt had,
I don't think that American prat Hoff does you yanks any favours with his OTT big mouth.

Why he is a judge on BGT I will never know, so have stopped watching it.

Its phonetic. Really. I saw it on tv. Pinki are you going to email that or what? I won't stereotype you, really. There are a few British female stereotypes here; that should cover at least two.
Question Author
trt we haven't seen him since Baywatch. I had to look up to see what BGT was. I really had no idea. He's yours now, we don't want him back. I heard the Germans liked him, see if they'll make a swap.
Cowtipper when you go back home see if you can get BBC.America...Because I was amazed last time I was in the US that people there had seen Are you being served" and thought Mrs Slocomb talking about "my pussy" was hilarious.
Illinois! You must know Jake and Elwood :o)
I think there are plenty of American stereotypes. Big and brash, no sense of anything that isn't within the good old US of A. They all think everything English is 'quaint'. If Hollywood is anything to go by, you believe that no matter what type of disaster may be about to destroy us all, America will save the world. All stereotypes have some basis in fact but I like to judge people as individuals.
Question Author
Of course we're going to save the world. We're on a mission from God.
God Bless America, and thanks to HM King George III for granting you the freedom to take up the sword of liberty on behalf of us all.
