Replacing Reg Plate

My rear reg plate is hanging off from one side after being reversed into. Halfords have told me they need the reg document before they can make and fit a new one. Is this right? I'm going to be going to London and back a couple of time this weekend and don't have time to dig the reg document out.

Yes it. Is. It's to stop folk switching plates on stolen cars. If you buy a personalised plate they need the dvl a doc before they will make the plates.

And I assume it is illegal for me to be driving around without a number plate on the rear of my car?

Yup, as woofgang says they must ask to see the V5 (reg. doc.) before they make the plate. The plate must also have the makers name and postcode on it. There are people out there who will make plates without seeing documents but their details will not be on the bottom of the plate, so it would be an illegal plate, (maybe worth using short term until you can get a legal one though ?)

Is it actually broken though, or just hanging off?

If it's just hanging off either fix it back in place with a replacement screw, or just use double sided sticky tape.

Well, it happened when my bf borrowed it the other week and claimed someone must have reversed into it when it was parked and he found it hanging off. It's still in one piece and he managed to get the screw back in the hole but it's come out again today and I can't push it back in. It's not secure when it's in there so can fall straight out again when I go over a bump.

As my journey to London involves the A40 and North Circular - which you can guarantee you will find police on - then I'm a bit worried I'll end up getting pulled over.

Double sided sticky tape is your friend.

Do you tow a trailer or caravan? you could swipe the plate off that for the weekend !

Oh yeah, didn't think of that. I think they used some when they replaced my front one a while back.

The thought of me towing anythig is a terrifying one! :o)

Stand it up the best you can in the rear window, and claim it has only just come off, smile and be polite and you 'might' get away with a producer or less.

Daft legislation. Halfords can't make up a plate when they can see the car and it's original broken plate yet one can go online and order a set of show plates at random! Not very bright these rule makers are they? Surely it's the whole "show plates" issue that needs addressing.

In the meantime, try taping up the original plate from behind [duct tape or something strong] and refixing it using larger screws if possible.
