To be fair to factor, he can't be on his own in thinking the songs great, it aint at number one for nowt.

As I said i dont mind it, i've certainly heard worse.

I would have thought Amy would have been number one for 2/3 weeks-most people seem to think she had great voice, and although not my taste-better than cher anyday

If you approach this song and video from the perspective of modern pop, it's as near to perfect as you can get. It absolutely ticks all the boxes in terms of production and delivery and image.

The talent lies in putting it all together and presenting it properly - and before anyone moans that Cher is just a mouthpiece for others - remember, that's how a seriously large number of stars got started.

Plus she is rather gorgeous!

Okay, I had my tongue in my cheek. The intro is quite promising but doesn't the chorus sound like a nursery rhyme/ "Build a bonfire, build a bonfire".

And why do nursery rhymes work? Because they are so catchy they will lodge in a mind that hasn't the tiniest clue what the words mean! Once again, a result for the writers and producers.

Yes, that's where the talent lies. Producing a silk purse from a sow's ear, some might say ; or producing something that is loved for a few weeks but will be completely forgotten in 5 years' time.

Years ago, rock and roll was considered trash music and even a great like Elvis had his haters. This is just the 'new' music that appeals to the masses!

oh dear Andy, she's so very not gorgeous! She walked past me in Liverpool a few months ago, I only realised it was her because someone was filming her on their mobile, she looked like a 15 year old chav doing the Sunday morning 'walk of shame'!
The song is catchy in the same way "ting tang walla walla bing bang" was, it's a pop song, the kids like it, that's up to them. Cher's ticking boxes to get a hit much in the same way The Vaccines are ticking indie boxes to get mainstream success. There's still musicians out there creating great music without the hunger for mainstream popularity and it's probably just because of this that you haven't yet heard them!

No Paul, it's not because of this - mainstream pop and all other genres have co-existed since recorded music began.

To suggest that a pop single prevents other artists from being heard is simply absurd - especially with the ever increasing media platforms on which to make music available to a mass audience.

I'm not saying that Andy, I'm saying a band can make great music without being heard because they're not striving to be heard, I'm not in anyway blaming pop music for keeping it in the background.
Pop will always appeal to the masses but when you get to those bands who want to make their own music because it's what they love, it's all marmite.

Apologies Paul if I misunderstood your post - but you said, quote, "...it's probably just because of this that you haven't yet heard them!" which I understood to mean that I have not heard of other music because this single is taking up airtime - did you mean something else?

If, as you say in your subsequent post, other musicians are not looking for this exposure, then there is no problem - is there?

I did mean the latter Andy, yeah, sorry for the confusion, and I don't think there is a problem, per se, it's maybe just a shame, more than anything, that some excellent musicians go unnoticed. That said, if you really want to access these more underground acts I'm sure it's a hell of a lot easier than it used to be! A mate of mine does a really good podcast on unsigned and emerging acts. There's plenty of chaff on there but some real gems now and then! It's called Route for the Underdog if you're interested.

Thanks for clearing up the glitch in communications there Paul - the perils of the written word - and thanks for the heads-up on new music.

As we agree, there are masses of ways to get music out there, but unfortunately, the Net is a two-edged sword - limitless musical platforms, but zero quality control, making finding gems pretty tough and time-consuming, but oh, so worth it! I will check out your friend's site - thanks again.
