Well, my Sony 2.1 surround system which I bought about 18 months ago for the TV has packed up. Was never that impressed with it as the amplifier always had a loud humm on it.

My Sony 42 inch TV is an LCD so not brilliant on sound, although it is not the very thin kind. Was wondering if anyone knew of some good speakers, only two please not 5.1 as it would not work in room with wires etc. Not too expensive, was wondering whether putting some computer speakers on it might help. If so, any good ones around. If not are sound bars any good.

Thanks.

Which? has just tested soundbars and the two Best Buys (Panasonic SU-HTB520 and Samsung HW-D570) are not cheap (£290 and£399 respectively). Cheaper ones were not very good.
If you have a reasonable hi-fi system connecting your TV to it is a much cheaper alternative.

Wish I did have a hi-fi system gingejbee would make life a lot simpler. I know these soundbars are quite expensive and as my Sony surround system was not that old I really did not want to spend too much at the moment, that is why I thought about computer speakers. Think I had better go into one of the shops and have listen to the computer speakers. I know the creative T40 are good just a matter of connecting them to the tv.
riptide: The best place to get advice (and to try things out) is Richer Sounds - they never fail to come up with the goods at a good price. Hope you have a branch near.
