I think you are all being very harsh on SF. If you read his autobiographies, especially volume 1, you will understand that he does realise the image he presents.

If he realises the image he presents and how it irritates people, why doesn't he try to change it, especially as he is a so-called entertainer. If you want to entertain, you have to work at being likeable.

That's correct - he spent a few months locked up, IIRC from his autobiography. Credit card fraud, wasn't it? Not exactly murder, like Leslie Grantham...
