1980s? TV series!!

Please can you help? Approx the 1980s there was a fictional drama TV series on, I think BBC about an ordinary family and one day the husband went to work and disappeared. The rest of the series was about the struggle his wife had to get the authorities to beleive her, and her struggle to pick up the pieces and get on with life. She did find him in the end but they had both moved on but I think she got a few answers. There was a well known actress in the lead but......I can't remember her name. Many thanks for any help.
