For all those of you out there above a certain age, you will either remember this kids telly with a warm fuzzy glow of satisfaction, or like me, remember the walk to switch on ITV. There was, however, one nay two examples that I actually enjoyed watching, mainly as they were my favourite books at the time, (and not too far off that now). These were Rick Mayle doing Georges Marvellous Medicine and Jezza Irons doing Danny the Champion of the World. Other than that, the whole programme was absolute gash.

Anyone out there have fond/hurl inducing memories of this?

I always thought that Jackanory was a subliminal thing - in my head it translated as turn the tv off, go outside and play football.

How young you must be; Rik Mayall on Jackanory (1986) by Jove!

My memories from the early-mid 70s include Scottish artist John Grant reciting "Little Nose" the caveboy using his own watercolour illustrations.

I had already outgrown the program by the time Prince Charles read his own story "The Old Man of Lochnagar" in 1984.

I couldn't wait for the programme to end, so I could watch Grange Hill.
I was no fan of Jackanory either. Sometimes I would just ignore it because I was waiting for whatever followed, sometimes I would venture into the forbidden, hedonistic world of ITV. Occasionally I would actually quite enjoy it - usually when it was being presented by the mighty Bernard "Womble" Cribbins.

Funny how everyone remembers Little Nose!

Wasn't Jackanory on the BBC?

Indeed it was, WillRiker. What I meant was that sometimes I would turn over to ITV rather than watch Jackanory.

That'll teach me to read questions at 4am when I can't sleep.

But on the subject I never really watched the programme, it just annoyed me for some reason.
