Following from the earlier Q http:// www.the answerb .../Que stion11 62157.h tml since then I have installed Chrome and it is working okay, so it must be an issue with IE on the offending machine.
When I first went to run Chrome a box came up asking whether or not to allow Chrome to access internet or something and I clicked "Allow".
It got me wondering that perhaps the same program has been told NOT to allow IE to connect. The only problem is I don't know the name of the program to look for and when I try to open IE it doesn't give the question to Allow or Deny.
Do you think it can be remedied. Many thanks for all the help.

Its your firewall!
you said earlier the firewall was off, but that would have been the windows firewall, whatever security suite you have installed for anti-virus probably has it's own firewall which is blocking IE.
Without knowing which firewall you have running it's a bit hard to say anything else.
