..I grew up with Bronco ,Gunsmoke and Rawhide I know its not pc anymore t shoot injuns ,but I do miss them.

i only grew to like him when i watched his early films, then came Stagecoach one of the best westerns of all time, with probably the greatest opening shot of Wayne, who was quite a dashing leading man, waiting for the stage, then of course the Searchers, which is probably playing against type and the best role he ever did, apart from a non western which was The Quiet Man...

Loved the Lone Ranger programmes, when I was a child. When a few were resurrected on TV, for us to indulge in nostalgia, I was surprised how violent they were, people being shot all the time.

Never took to John Wayne films. Thought his best was the first one he ever got a credit in, which was Stagecoach. In that, he had little of his later image.

I never missed Wells Fargo.Over the last couple of weeks we've watched Open Range, Quigley Down Under and the latest version of True Grit. I enjoyed all three but still prefer the Dukes version of TG

Hi fredpull yes they were violent but we never thought about that then,it was just cowboys and indians and not so much read into it then as there is now,just fiction and all happening in Western US lol.

You could save time and trouble by just watching one. Blazing Saddles has all the best moments of all westerns in one film !

Yes, mallyh, quite so ! Every time I see Blazing Saddles, I notice something I'd missed e.g. Mel Brooks appears as a red indian chief, complete with magnificent feathered head- dress. On the band of that is what appears to be a traditional red indian design. When you look closely, it is not. It is Hebrew, and reads "Kosher for Passover"

It gets worse, jno. When the red indian, Mel Brooks, sees who is in the wagon, he says " What, now blacks!" in Yiddish.
