I have noticed recently on my TV that some ads are in 'letterbox' format and surprisingly some TV programs eg. the current series The Mill on BBC 1.

Why is this? It does not happen very often and it is not my TV.

Thanks

You mean they are long horizontally, with spaces at top and bottom? I've not seen that (just had a Mill advert) - perhaps it's the way your TV is set up?
Most if not all ads are in widescreen. Is your tv set up for widescreen?
I asked my son this exact question when I watched last weeks edition of The Mill and noticed the same, his answer was that there are new formats out there and The Mill must have been filmed in one of these, he also said that you get a lot of BluRay DVD also in this format. Also thought it was my TV but checked it out last week against my sons and we both show the same picture.

Thanks KJN2

Glad you said that as my TV is set up correctly and does this sometimes for films made for cinema but not usually for TV series - in fact The Mill is the only one currently in this format.

Thanks
