I was particularly interested in last night's programme because I've had four separate visits to (the then) Soviet Union travelling extensively by train (and plane) including the Trans-Siberian to the far side of Siberia...in Winter.
A few points...he took the easy option going in Summer, the trains were certainly NOT "fabulous" way-back-when and how does he get all those outfits into the one tiny suitcase seen at the very start of the show...?

I'm with quizzy here. I like Portillo and I like trains but, dear god, the producer should have a word in his shell-like. Last night he would have shared the distinction with the Great Wall of China, of being visible from space....clash isn't a strong enough word.
It makes me quite nostalgic for the days of B+W telly.

gingebee, I agree, I was in St Petersburg 7 yrs ago and the train was like something out of the war,, grey, dark and all carriages locked with Russian Guards and dogs checking all passports, I was terrified. Even St Petersburg was grey and all the people trudged about with no colours, and this was in August, of course Moscow was a different story, all colourful and cosmopolitan.
