"Wolf Hall" is on BBC One tonight at 21:00. I found the books to be all but unreadable, but I am looking forward to this dramatisation. Anybody else planning to watch ?

I haven't read the books, but from the little I managed to watch it seemed to me to be a poorly disguised soap - with an even poorer script.
Well I loved it, I thought it was terrific. Brilliant acting, very atmospheric, terrific sets, wonderful locations and not a bad story. I'm surprised I seem to be the only one enjoying it.
^^^ poor screenwriting 237

Spot on Naomi. I am taking a break to watch a bit of it as I am intrigued. Hope to be back by 11.00 or perhaps earlier, depending.
I thought it a little slow but superb acting, atmosphere and authenticity. I shall wait until after the second ep before making my mind up.
Disappointing Blackadder. (That is my favourite period in history too).
then you really should read the novels naomi
I applaud Naomi for sticking it out for 20 minutes. I only managed to last 15.
I've got the hump now. I watched it of 65 mins but no applause for me:-( Sob!
Mediocre .I was hoping it would be more watchable because the book is totally unreadable .How she won a Booker for that boring tome is beyond me .
A gold star for endurance, Ladybirder. ;o)
My least favourite period in history
Did not enjoy the book but was prepared to give it a try
Not impressed
Thank you Naomi:-) I shall wear it with pride. Funny thing is there is nobody more surprised than me that I actually liked it and stuck with it to the end. But there you go.
Aw I recorded it, don't know whether to bother watching it after reading ABers reviews.
You're welcome. :o)
I thought it a little slow but i was quite warming to it toward the end. They could've given us a double episode to start us off, i thought. Looking forward to next week's episode.
A pretentious screenplay, slavishly following a pretentious script written by a pretentious would-be author.

How to turn people away from history in one easy lesson, by Hilary Mantel.
Tony give it a go and make your own mind up. Try and stick with it, I think it got better the longer I watched it:-)
Perhaps it's best that you and I stick to the history books, Blackadder. :o)

I am with you totally. I never had time to read the book but sat through the first episode with my wife. We both love history and my wife, in particular, the Tudor period. We thought it was brilliant. For a change the BBC got the sound and dialogue correct so we didn't have to ask each other what had been said. The picture, as we had been warned, was deliberately darkened so as to portray candlelight. It worked well and was not too dark but gave out the right atmosphere. Glad I recorded it. Will record the whole series so we can look back on it in the future.
Did any one think that Thomas Cromwell looked like a very young Richard Harris? The mem sahib thought he bore a resemblance to Robert Mitchum also :-). Well done the BBC. About time.
