This is for all soaps and running dramas not only Coronation Street. The Richard Hillman story line had 4 different endings filmed. The reason given to the press is in case the plot line is leaked or they need to change direction The truth is due to death (Seth Armstrong, Emmerdale, Stan Ogden, Coronation Street, Most of the older Archers cast! ), illness (Julia Goodyear Bet Lynch, ) or tabloid nightmares, i.e.: (Leslie Grantham, Steve McFadeden, Danielle Westbrook, Chris Quentin, John Savant, Lynne Perrie, Pat Pheonix etc). Some of the plot scenes are recorded many weeks in advance, this is why you never see references to real events, the cricket ashes, world cups, news events etc. However the real reason is that although Coronation Street is ITVs flagship programme re advertising revenues & status etc, the actors are not the best paid in the world and the shows producers like to keep them on their toes and in place. I can see the logic in this no one actor is bigger than the show, not many actors leave the street and go to better things. Sara Lancashire apart I can only think of Phil Middlemass (Where the heart is) that have left and been seen on TV. Dont include Joanna Lumley she was only in for a handful of episodes.
