//Germany and Austria's interior ministers have accused private initiatives to save refugees in the Mediterranean of intentionally working with people smugglers..…. The charge that NGO rescue ships, intentionally or not, help encourage would-be migrants to attempt the treacherous Mediterranean crossing in overcrowded and unseaworthy boats isn't new, but it has never been leveled so directly by such high-ranking government representatives. Italy, where the vast majority of those rescued at sea are taken, drew up a controversial code of conduct for NGO sea rescuers last week which also implied that they, willingly or not, were abetting the people traffickers.//

They are, willingly or not, abetting the people traffickers….. aren’t they?

vengaroberta, this is about NGOs facilitating people traffickers.
Yes they are abetting the people traffickers.

I’ve always thought that after the first couple of boats were ‘rescued’ it changed from rescue missions to people trafficking.

If you want to help you help at the source not the end place.

There should be no ‘rescue’ boats out in the Mediterranean Sea. If a distress call comes in then perhaps a boat sent out to tow them back.

And this has very little to do with Brexit or the UK regardless of where they want to end up.

//There should be no ‘rescue’ boats out in the Mediterranean Sea. If a distress call comes in then perhaps a boat sent out to tow them back.//

But the rescue boats are usually in the right place at the right time and just in time to save a capsizing boat filled with many women, some pregnant, elderly and children.

What exactly are you saying here as it doesn’t sound too humanitarian or sympathetic.

Do the RNLI constantly patrol the waters around the UK on the off chance that a vessel MAY be in danger.?

All the boats I see are full of fit and healthy young men.

Minkyme, //the rescue boats are usually in the right place at the right time and just in time to save a capsizing boat filled with many women, some pregnant, elderly and children. //

That's the point. Those rescue boats are enabling the traffickers who fill those boats - not that I've seen many women, or elderly, or children aboard them. They are, in the main, filled with young men.
A more appropriate name for these "rescue-boats" would be complimentary water-taxis.
They have been aiding the traffikers pretty much since the off. AS I have said on here before.

If they want to pick up people then fine but take them back to where they came from. Many these days are not even in international waters but still within Lybia so just take them back to shore.

As to the full of women and children, may I respectfully suggest you go to spec-savers? They clearly load a few women, pregnant if at all possible and kids in order give the 'rescuers' the tired old excuse as you are using. The despicable traffickers in other words simply use pregnant women and children and have no care whatsoever for their safety.

I'm right behind the Italians on this.

sanmac, indeed - or free ferries.
Yes, all well known. Deliberate collusion. Mobile phone. Arrange meet just outside libyan coastal waters. Effect "rescue"

Very disappointing for me that organisations which I used to support like Save the Children and Médecins sans Frontières are now controlled by anti-Western ideologues and are assisting this invasion of Europe by culturally backward masses from sub-Saharan Africa.
Question Author
^Indeed.
Under the new NGO protocol, of course, the traffickers get to keep the hulks, rust-buckets and pedalos for re-use. When the navies were doing it they were usually confiscated, weren't they?

The effect is to make the job easier and cheaper for the traffickers, thereby stimulating the trade.

The plot thickens ....

//Charity boats ‘collude with traffickers’: Italy’s intelligence service has evidence that charity boats that pick up migrants in the Mediterranean are colluding with Libyan people traffickers, a senior prosecutor claims.

Carmelo Zuccaro, a Sicilian magistrate, is gathering evidence on traffickers who are tipping off charity boats as they dispatch overloaded migrant vessels from Libyan beaches. //

And something more to think about:

//He is also investigating allegations that they are funding them so they have enough ships to pick up the migrants at sea.///

These types of "rescues" have led to this Monty Pythonish chapter in British History tickling the back of my mind: “Starting in 1939, it became common practice for groups of healthy young German men and the occasional remarkably healthful pregnant young German woman to set sail from the coast of France in various types of un-seaworthy craft in an endeavour to reach the shores of England. The Great British people, in the spirit of magnanimous humanity, set forth to rescue these poor unfortunates and tow them ashore. This situation continued for a number of years until in 1945 the entire nation came to the realization that: “Bloody Hell, we’ve gone and aided and abetted in our own invasion…Flamin’ Norah!”
That should be "healthy", not "healthful".
