If You Were To Choose To Live In Norfolk Or Dorset (Uk) Which Would You Choose?

Just interested. I would love to move out of London one day, but I like both of these places. Which is the best for friendliness, in particular?

Well I have a house in Dorset (Burton) but I think in hindsight I would sooner live in Norfolk preferably with a riverside house on the Broads. From what I recall of the places I visited in Yarmouth it's like going back in time whereas Dorset is now too commercialised.

and I like the profusion of C18 houses of Ham stone
which is not surprising, as I grew up in Beaminster

health services cannot be called good

and friendliness - Manchester is much better

Darzetttt - the hardening of the consonant ( s goes to z, p goes to b, etc) is called fortition, and is unusual in English ( weakening (lenition) bottle to bo''le, what to wha'). So unusual that people find the dialect impenetrable - aaaaarrrrh !

Norfolk, but then I was born and bred in Suffolk and have a lot of relatives in Norfolk so I'm biased.

Dorset for me, it is beautiful in that part of the country, warm and welcoming with beautiful Bournemouth beach and Weymouth nearby plus the vast New Forest on your doorstep and the Isle of Wight a short hop away!

Norfolk all the way for me, Dorset is pretty but a lot more expensive and the birding is nowhere near as good

Norfolk for me because I live here, and when I visited Dorset I enjoyed it but missed the space and peacefulness.

If you plan on buying a new build then go anywhere; they’re all the same and it’s just a case of funding so where convenient.

If you want city living then Norwich is brilliant; good shopping, culture and heritage, friendly and safe.

Norfolk’s market towns are great. (Mostly) They have a community, enough shops and amenities to save you travelling far and reasonably good bus services.

The coastal towns are also good places to be although they do get busy in the summer but that would apply in Dorset too.

My favourite area is the Norfolk Broads and its various villages. Good community, supported by the boating industry and surrounded by beautiful countryside and nature reserves.

I'm a bit late only just read this but we are in our 80s and moved to Norfolk end of January. We lived in Kent for over 50 years. We love it just wish we'd done it when when we could get about more. We live in Holt area, well not too far from there, and have friends in Holt.

And I have lived in Dorset for years and it's featuring in 2 threads currently and unusually. I would say it's a county of 2 parts. Some of the inner countryside and Western beach areas are just stunning, rolling hills, thatched cottages, cute villages, green fields, streams and woodland. The other part is the Bournemeouth/Poole/ Weymouth bit. I understand some might enjoy holidaying there and there is certainly some very well off communities and top notch social life and long sandy beaches but sadly there is a lot of drug addled ant-social behaviour and deprived areas too. Not the Bournemouth of my childhood and Weymouth is considered rough by those who live in the area.

Thanks, Prudie. Shame isn't it. I got talking to a lady in the Castle Point area and she said Boscombe is the drugs capital. Think I'll just take a break in Norfolk sometime soon and see what might come of that xx
