Bought the wee basic mobile and as £10 would do me nearly a year I got a fella in the phone shop to set it up for me so I asked him to ring my house   I knew that a pound or two would go   I was astonished when he told me I have to top up ten pounds every month. Surely that is like a contract.  This phone was to be in my car for emergency.  Now I can't use it at all

here are different Pay As You Go SIM deals, JJ.  

You have bought a £10 deal that lasts for one month.  At the end of the month you can pay another £10 or go elsewhere - it is not a 12 month contract.

With this one you have to top up £10 every 120 days, so that will cost you £30 a year

By the way, it would never cost you a pound or two to ring a landline in the UK.

As far as I know you have to buy it online but you can pay by PayPal, if you use that.  The SIM is free, the £10 is for your usage.

By the way, are you happy with your new red car?  Got used to the clutch now?

Don't know about PayPal so it would have to be online.

PayPal is just a way of paying for online shopping, JJ.  If you aren't used to it, just use your card.

What has happened to the SIM the chap in the shop put in to your phone?

The first SIM was faulty.  He put a new one in and got the voucher going.   I just tried to phone myself in the house and I couldn't hear the ring tone of the mobile. I tried my friend but I couldnt hear her. Im very depressed and I have returned it argos.  I'm fed up of being deaf as the audiologist has told me my hearing has gone down from the knock on my head.  Just fed up

The good old original PAYG agreements which cost nothing if you didn't use it have long been gone unfortunately.  The greedy comms providers (who obviously have formed a cartel) soon abandoned that as it provided no revenue, only initial capital.

Back in those days though it cost more to make a call or send a text.

Now we can get unlimited minutes and texts and a good amount of data for under a fiver a month.

Compared to landline costs it's a bargain, not a greedy rip off

I don't think £30 for a year is over the top for those who want a phone for emergency and occasional use

My hubby just won't use a mobile but he has one I make him take with him if away on his own. It is pay-as-you go with o2. Don't know when last I put £10 voucher on it. Long time ago..as long as phone is used once in awhile to keep it alive.

I use Tesco PAYG and only put £10 on it about once a year if that.  The free credit they give you only lasts a month but the rest stays there until it is used.  I only use mine if I am out on my own as wife is on hers much more than me.  I am old school and only use phone when I have to.

Shedman, I don't think that SIM plan is available to new customers, I've just looked at the Tesco website and it says each top up lasts a month.

Barry the one I have is for triple credit.  You put on say £10 and then you get an extra £20 which lasts for the month.  After that you still have your original £10 until it runs out however long it takes.  That is on Tesco mobile.
