Old Grey Whistle Test Many years ago I saw a large man with black and white makeup on singing oprea style to rock music I think he was german please help

It sounds like Klaus Nomi, a German avant garde singer who combined extracts from famous opera arias with OTT show tunes and pop classics like Lou Christie's 'Lightning Strikes. Nomi died in 1983, with the dubious distinction of being recognised as the first pop star to die from the then almost unkown HIV virus.
