Perhaps Harry can put his uncle up!
It seems he has a 75 year lease on the place left to him by the Queen, but the King is planning to cease payment for his security.
What I don't understand is that his security team of ten people is said to cost £3m a year. That's £300k (or £6k per week) for each of them. Are they perhaps being a little overpaid?
"Go on then, NJ, how much would you charge to be expected to possibly lay down your life for someone?"
That isn't the issue, Ken.
I would be very surprised if the ten people providing this service received £6k a week. As paul says, there are other costs to consider, but much of those are capital costs (vehicles, equipment, communcations, etc.) which can either be removed and used elsewhere or retained for somebody other than the Grand Old Duke of York. In any case, costs of that nature which are attributable solely to guarding the Royal Lodge should be spread over their lifetime, no charged in the single year they are purchased.
Just for comparison (because I know the Royal Lodge security services are not provided by the police) there were reports a few years ago of police Royal Protection Officers being paid £100,000 per year. But this was a result of them receiving an allowance that had been discontinued but reinstated following a court case. The £100k included that allowance backdated seven or eight years.
It was just a throwaway remark. I find it quite incredible that a security exercise that employs just ten people should cost £60,000 a week.
The public is enjoying this story, because of the planet-sized levels of hubris that continue to land on the Duke.
He was long known for his boorish and arrogant behavior, and now he is no longer protected by his loving, but indulgent mother, his chickens continue to come home to roost.
No-one can really feel sorry for a man who spends his days idling around living the life of a wealthy country squire, and brooding about how beastly the world is.
He should salvage what little dignity he has left, and move out without fuss.
Why not try and lose your reputation as a slimy freeloading creep, instead of polishing it on a daily basis.
