Early 80s kids stop-animation - dolls house
10 Answers
In the early 80s I remember seeing a kids animated programme with real dolls, and it was quite dark - a wax doll melted in a fire (maybe in the dolls house?), whilst another climbed into a supermarket freezer (!). If anyone remembers this, and remembers the name, please let me know! Thanks.

The series with the doll burning in the doll's house was 'Tottie: the story of a doll's house'. It was an Oliver Postgate (of Ivor the Engine, Bagpuss etc. fame) production, based on a 1940s childrens' book called 'the dolls' house' by Rumer Godden. The book was re-published at the time of the tv series under the same title as the show.
There wasn't anything about a supermarket freezer in that one.
The doll that burned was called Birdie (made of celluloid, not wax, though a lonley wax doll at a doll exhibition did feature briefly), and got burned up when she jumped in between a little plush doll (Apple, who was her 'son' in the family of dolls) and a candle. It was all the fault of an evil porcelaine doll called Marchpane. Porcelain dolls still make me nervous.
The title character was a little wooden victorian doll who was the 'daughter' of the family.
It was a great show and I read the book, which I still have, afterwards.

Hi. I have a memory of a short bit of animation from my childhood which has been on my mind for ages. It is of a small wooden peg doll who lives in a supermarket freezer and sleeps in a matchbox. A girl (live action character I think) makes tiny clothes to give to her and she plays tennis with frozen peas.
I remember it so clearly but can't find out about it anywhere and nobody I ask has ever heard of it.

Hello everyone. I was searching for this myself as it was a favourite of mine. It was a book called The Little Girl And The Doll http:// www.ama zon.co. uk/Litt le-Girl -Puffin -Modern -Classi cs/dp/0 1413253 64. I vaguely remember a children's program where mini people lived in a Victorian girls dolls house. If anyone can shed light on this program.
I remember this, especially the matchbox and playing with peas. Every couple of years it pops back into my head and I NEED to see it again. I researched some and found there was an episode of Words and Pictures that featured it but I can’t find a video and it aired 1982 which would be too early for me. I remember it vividly and I was only 2 then. I then found reference to a Storytime episode but again, I haven’t yet found a video of it but that aired in 1988/89 based on BBC archives which would make more sense for me to remember it. It’s a vivid childhood memory that I would love to revisit.
