PREAMBLE: Prize entry 1: Cryptic elements crossword
Each crossword square can have one or two letters, which must be letters of an elemental symbol, or the letters D or T (for deuterium or tritium). For example, Dalton could be written D(Al)TON.
Answers
I am making headway with answers to fit the clues, but don’t fully grasp how to go about the elemental entries. For instance:
11d Ref took bets about the German festival (11): OKTOBERFEST
The grid carries 9 slots, so 2 elements are to be entered? If so, what
letters should appear in the 9 slots? Thanks for elucidating this!
As an aside to the Q's about the Cryptic puzzle, if anyone prints the grid from the link @ 10:57 to do the "Quick" clues, there's an error - Col 5, Row 12 should be black & Col 6, Row 12 should be white, to allow for 22d.
While Row 12's symmetry is unaffected, Rows 11 & 13 have dissimilar patterns, causing it to look "off".
Apologies to Matakari for the diversion.
