Training for Great North Run
I have just been offered a place in the Great North Run and I am going to accept this as I will be running for Children's Leukemia Research.
At the moment i am not very fit and i can't even run a mile. Can anybody suggest a training plan and diet regime which will get me fit enough for this 13 mile run.
I really want to be fairly fit for this event. If not I can walk some of the way.
If there are any people out there who have run similar distance runs please pass on some suggestions on whether you will be allowed to walk some of the way.

All access is free, and they also have an events calendar where you can see some shorter distance events that you might like to try first. As for walking, I alternated running and walking for most of my first half marathon and finished in 2 hours and twenty-five minutes. Eighteen years later, and heading very rapidly towards the fortieth birthday (only two months to go) have started running again with the New York marathon as the target in November. Have done a couple of half marathons in the last three months, finishing the Milton Keynes one in 1 hour and 52 minutes this weekend.
Lots of my friends do the GNR, and rest assured, there are lots of walkers. Enjoy it, you may also consider doing a Cancer Research 10k as a build up event, these are very informal runs with the emphasis on participation rather than speed, and are held in the grounds of stately homes.
Hey Mowbray, Im doing the GNR too, am not exactly what you would call a natural runner, and I dont have the time to get out more then 2 or 3 times a week. I have also sined up for the Great Manchester Run (10k) in May as a practice run, and the MS team have sent me a training plan, and I also receive regular tips on diet and training. Would be surprised if Childrens Luekemia dont do the same, why not try dropping them an email.
Hope it all goes well, and Ill see you there!!!!
