An '80's German TV series

In the '80's there was a series on TV that I think was made in Germany, I cannot remember, it was dubbed, so we never knew the original title. It is about a girl who's dad is a docter in the war. He goes away and gives her a doll. Then she gets really sick and has to go recover on an island where she befriends a boy. On the ferry back home, she drop the doll in the water.

It was a very sad story and I am dying to know the real title.
