Oftern wondered this myself. It seems that the modern Vogue is to use the word 'IS' rather than the word 'ARE'.
One couple = is

Two or more couple = are
In fact there's something else wrong here which neatly solves your problem. As the losing contestants are still in the building they haven't actually left the studio yet, therefore the correct phrase is "The next couple to leave will be...."

For my next trick I will bring about peace in the Middle East.
I'm with Ethel - 'couple' is a collective noun denoting two of something. So - 'couple is' or 'couples are'.
buck - they may still be in the building. No one is particular interested in their physical location.

The couple is leaving the competition.
