Mini series on Channel 4 or Five

I'm trying to find the name of a mini series show on either 4 or 5, some time ago. I'm thinking it was about an alien invasion, but could be wrong. What I do remember is that it was billed as the name of the author and then the title. The name of the author was also the name of someone else, possibly a British politician? I thought Luke Perry was in it, but have looked him up and can't find anything (what got me thinking about it was watching Supernova last night!). Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
