Where did the monkey from the pg tips ad originate. Who was the first person to knit munkee?

Both him and Johnny Vegas were in adverts for ITV digital. Hes voiced by comedian Ben Miller.

Don't know who knitted him, but I got one free with PG tips tea, and he now sits on top of my printer. I don't think he would have become so popular if it was not for the great Johnny Vegas.

Don't know who knitted munkey but I have one as well.
But Kermit the frog was made from an old coat belonging to Jim Hensons mother.
