How did each epsiode get its title as, when broadcast, no title was ever assigned to the story?

Most American TV series don't display their episode titles on screen, but they are given titles by the writers - it's the same with any series.

I don't know why they don't display episode titles as it does help to identify each episode in the viewers' minds.

Annoying isn't It, that they don't show it. When the X-files first started I had no way of knowing full stop! What any of them were called. I thought 'the truth is out there' was a follow up. Doh!

So at what point were the epsisodes assigned their titles?

Was it at first broadcast, eg. did the titles appear in TV listings or was it not until the series were released on video, for instance?

Titles are assigned by the writers of the episode, normally during the writing stage, and long before filming takes place. The titles normally appear in listings magazines, on the internet, sky EPG etc. so it's easy to find out what they are.

www.epguides.com is a good site for episode titles past and present (and future).

For some series, for whatever reason, the writers seem not to have come up with episode titles, or no official ones were ever indicated - Sapphire & Steel being a prime example. In this case, the fans made up their own 'unofficial' ones to compensate.

it would be helpful if they listed the titles on screen. It would be even more useful if they credited the music they used during programmes, but that's a rant for another day!
