Hi Everyone, What did you think to the ending of ife On Mars? Is it open to interpretation or clear cut? Was he in a coma all along? Did he die when he jumped or did he survive and wake up in a coma again? If the later, then Gene Hunt and the others dont really exist, except in Sam's mind. Or was he really in 1973 all along. What do you think?
I guess what it was actually saying is that if you go into a coma, or maybe even die, you go and live in a parallel universe?
In any case, I am glad Sam decided to go back. The idea that the bartender gave him was great..that you are only alive if you 'feel' (Sam didn't feel the cut on his hand whilst he was in a boring meeting at work). It was only then that he knew where he belonged :o)
I'm going with the theory that he choose jump off that rooftop to be in a Persistant Vegetative State, to stay in 1973.
I think the writers painted themselves into a corner by making the 1973 characters so real, and wanting a happy " the guy gets the girl " ending that he had to stay in 1973.
I notice no mention was made of his 2006 girlfriend who was in jeopardy when he was originally run over.
I thought it was good -
It was always going to be a bit odd but I'm glad it wasn't all just a dream.
You have to wonder though - was Frank Morgan right when he said that Sam was undercover and real name was Williams and he had a coach crash when he was 12 and that he got flashbacks with Drs talking to him - was he really from 1973?
I think its been a brilliant series and I will miss it on a tuesday night.
Mr Spudqueens interpretation of it was that he jumped off the roof to put himself back in a coma - which worked as he was getting a message through on the radio but said he'd had enough of that station and retuned to another one which was playing Life On Mars. Mr Spudqueen reckons that when the Test Card girl switched the telly off at the end that was when the Sam in a coma dies.
